Leadership and management essentials

As productions continue to grow in scale and complexity, heads of department (HoDs) and managers are increasingly expected to lead larger teams, create positive working cultures and support people to perform at their best. Effective leadership today is about much more than managing tasks – it requires the ability to build trust, communicate clearly, work inclusively, maintain professional boundaries and create environments where people can thrive.

Who it's for

This course is for heads of department and managers working in high-end television. It is designed for those with responsibility for leading people and teams, helping them to develop practical leadership skills that support high performance, positive working relationships and inclusive working cultures.

This three and a half hour training course covers the essential skills needed to be an effective manager on a production, including:

  • Leadership as a journey – authority, behaviour and culture
  • Trust, communication and performance
  • Accessible, inclusive leadership
  • Working safely and setting professional boundaries
  • Sustaining ourselves as leaders

Through practical discussion, reflection and real-world scenarios, participants explore how everyday leadership behaviours shape team culture, performance and wellbeing. The course focuses on creating psychologically safe, inclusive and productive working environments while supporting leaders to navigate challenges with confidence and professionalism.

β€œThe swiftness with which some crew progress means they have not developed their soft skills, so it is brilliant that ScreenSkills is continuing with its training in leadership and management, together with antibullying and harassment, and is able to offer it to all productions.”
